I
adopted Timothy when my other cat, Crystal, disappeared during a
snow storm when I lived up north. She was a declawed indoor cat and
after several weeks of intense searching I thought I'd never find
her. A co-worker's cat had recently given birth, so I went to see
them since I couldn't bear being without a pet. There were four
kittens: a gray one, two orange twins, and another one of a paler
orange color, like a strawberry blond. I had always wanted a smoky
gray kitten, and decided right away to adopt that one, even though he
ran from me when I tried to pet him. The orange twins totally ignored
me. The one I liked the least, the strawberry blond kitten, was the
only one that paid me any attention. In fact, he demanded my
attention, crawling into my lap, checking me out thoroughly. I kept
putting him down but he kept coming back.
The kittens were not yet ready to leave their mother, so I had to
wait until the following week to bring my gray kitty home. But all
week long, thoughts of the "ugly" one crept into my head. I
finally decided that if the gray one ignored me again, I would take
the ugly one, since he seemed to like me. When I returned, the gray
one and the twins all ignored me again, but the ugly one was just as
curious as before. I scooped him up and put him in the carrier. He
"talked" to me the whole way home, and when we got there,
he popped out of the carrier and made himself at home immediately. He
did, and still does, sleep with me every night without fail, cuddling
as close as he can, with a rumbling purr that never stops. He often
rests his cheek on mine and we sleep entwined. No matter how bad the
day has been, this is the time when all is right with the world.
The kitty I perceived as ugly quickly grew into a handsome, albeit
hefty, fellow. His intelligence is as expansive as his waistline and
continually amazes me. Timothy has outsmarted me on several
occasions, but has also rescued me when I locked myself out of the
house once -- by somehow pulling on the doorknob while I fretted
around outside. There are several things he's done over the years
that I still can't figure out how he accomplished. I love him
fiercely and I know the feeling is mutual. If animals have souls, he
is truly my soulmate, which I think he somehow knew from the start,
but which took me, a mere human, a little longer to figure out.
By the way, I found Crystal shortly after I adopted Timothy. She had
spent over five weeks in the cold wet snow, had lost half her body
weight and was dirty and matted but she didn't even have frostbite. I
truly believe that some higher power was behind all of this, for I
would never have gotten Timothy if Crystal hadn't been lost.
Over the years Timothy, Crystal and I have weathered several changes
of household which included assorted humans and other pets such as a
rabbit, guinea pig, dog, and three or four cats. They have taken it all in
stride and survived some of it better than I have. We have since
evolved into a family of five felines and two humans, and have moved
to sunny Florida where the screened patio is "the" place to
be, as it's the prime stalking spot for lizards and bugs. Even
better, there are no more snowstorms to worry about. You can see more
of Timothy and meet his "siblings" at
