Socrates
(the wise ol' kitty cat) adopted my husband and me while we
were at the University of Florida. He was abandoned and among many
stray cats that had accumulated at the apartment complex. At sixteen
pounds, he was definitely the top cat, but he allowed all of the
other cats to share his food as long as they respected his authority
(the rips in his ears demonstrate the numerous failed attempts to
challenge his authority). One five-pound tuxedo stray we named Dart
was even allowed to sleep on his back. After months of stealing our
hearts with his "boomer purrs" we took him in and he
instantly became an indoor cat who is pampered constantly. Indoor
life agreed with Socrates so much that he went up to twenty and a
half pounds. After seven years of dieting, he is now a slim seventeen
pounds.
Today, Socrates is a healthy, happy, constantly hungry, affectionate,
and wonderful companion. My husband, who was definitely not a cat
person pre-Socrates, works at home and they are best buddies.
Socrates waits by the door for us to come home, snuggles next to us
at night and wakes us in the morning by butting his head into ours or
touching his paw to our mouths while purring loudly. The above
picture catches Socrates when he forgot to put his tongue back in his
mouth after grooming. The picture is in my office and it looks like
he is constantly sticking his tongue out at me because I'm at work
and he's all warm and comfy at home on the bed. Socrates was
definitely a gift from heaven and we cannot imagine life without him.
