Smokey
was a stray cat that we adopted in January of 2000. At first,
Smokey was very timid, but he now takes every step with pride by ruling
the house. Our Maine Coon, true to his disposition, has a tendency to
wait outside a closed door for people or park himself in a seat right
next to someone. We have trained Smokey to understand the meaning of
different words and phrases. For example, if we say, "Do you want to go
outside," he will immediately head for the door to check on the weather
before venturing out. He will go out to explore the yard, but if another
cat comes into the yard he will stand very firm and defend his
territory. Our house has three doors, but when Smokey goes out, he
always returns through the same door from which he left.
Whenever we awake in the morning or arrive home in the evening Smokey
greets us with a chirping trill until someone in the house pays
attention to him. A Maine Coon is a true delight for kids. Our Smokey
always sleeps on the same pillow as our ten-year-old daughter. If she is
not at home he prefers his own chair in the living room. Strangely
enough, he never sleeps in her room without her presence.
