His
name comes from "Two-Step" Bay, our favorite place in Hawaii, and
"Smokey," the Mafia style cat in the movie, Stuart Little. It was that
specific movie that introduced us to the British Blue breed, and we fell
in love with it instantly. This prompted us to start researching about
the breed immediately, and we were very happy to find out that there was
a breeder in Ontario (a couple of hours away) that bred British
Shorthairs exclusively. He, along with his brothers and sisters were
all "reserved" even before they were born, so we were a little
disappointed at first. However, by a stroke of luck (for us), the
individual that had originally reserved him backed out at the last
minute. We purchased him from the breeder when he was three months old and
our lives haven't been the same since.
Let's just start things off by stating that he's a "Mama's Boy." He's
very vocal (which is a little uncommon in this breed), he loves to
follow my wife around when she comes home from work, he begins to regale
her with everything he did that day. He wakes my wife up in the
mornings by tapping her gently on the face. I believe she often stays
in bed just to be greeted by the little guy on purpose. He's not really
a lap cat and prefers to sit by her side when she sleeps, or sleeps at
the foot of the bed. Schmokey is blessed with the richest and plushest
coat found on a cat! This breed has a coat that is very dense and soft,
and it looks different under various lighting conditions. His eyes,
like that of true British Shorthair cats, has a black center with a
brilliant gold ring. It's difficult to get really good pictures of him
using a flash as his eyes and coat change color. Since we brought him
home, Schmokey has behaved like a dog. He plays catch, fetches balls,
and gives a "high five" when presented with a treat. He follows my Wife
around the house and waits for her by the door to arrive home from work.
We had believed him to be such a genius (my wife's mother refers to him
as a "Wonder Cat") until we found information, through research, that
this is somewhat typical behavior for British Blues.
He's just so adorable. Friends have commented that he looks like he's a
cute "upper-class cat." He loves having his ears rubbed and has his own
toy chest. He will periodically bring out toys that he hasn't played
with in a while, and bring them to our feet and look up at us for play
time. We've yet to get him to put the toys away of course. Schmokey is
special because he's warm, caring and does wonders for my wife's
happiness. My wife spoils him, so I'm sure he's happy too.
