When
I got my first apartment 3000 miles away from my parents house I
desperately missed my three cats I left behind, so one of the first
things I did was head down to the humane society to adopt a cat. I was
looking for an older cat, one who had gotten through the playful stage.
All I wanted was a nice, fat, lazy cat who would be happy just being a
lap cat. I walked into the cat room at the shelter looking for my nice,
docile lap cat, but every time I walked by this one cage the cat would
meow at me and swipe at me. He was young, less than a year old, and he
really wasn't what I was looking for, but he just kept meowing and
swatting at me. I finally went over to him and got his story. He had
been found when he was a very young kitten and been brought to the
shelter with a severe respiratory infection. He had been in the clinic
part of the shelter for close to eight months, and it was his first day
out to be adopted. Since it appeared that I had been chosen I decided
to take him home. Over the next nine years Oscar moved around with me
through six apartments and two roommates, and many times he was the only
source of stability in my life. Now we have settled down in a house
with a husband, two dogs, and three other cats, but Oscar still makes
sure everyone, including my husband, doesn't forget that I'm still,
first and foremost, his human.
