When
Vinny joined our family (consisting of four humans and two
rambunctious dogs) eighteen months ago, we had no idea that he was going
to win our hearts so completely and in such short order. Four months
earlier, my sister and her husband had adopted a stray female kitty who
turned out to be pregnant. Bonnie, who was featured on Cat of the Day
on March 11, duly gave birth to four beautiful kittens. Vinny, with his
spectacular coloring and symmetrical tabby markings, was dubbed
"Calendar Girl" or "Callie" for short. The only problem was, as we
found out from the vet when he was three weeks old, Callie was a boy! We
had mistakenly thought that all cats with his coloration are female. At
this point, hoping that we had not inflicted permanent emotional harm on
him, we changed his name to "Sunshine Boy" and hoped for the best. Six
weeks later he joined our family, and we renamed him "Vinny." (He
looked like a Vinny!)
Vinny has since grown into a handsome hunk of cat. He weighs fifteen
pounds and counting, and, fortunately, has a very sweet disposition. He
loves launching himself at stationary objects such as his scratching
post and the back of my computer chair. He's particularly goofy late at
night, when he keeps us in stitches with his antics. He zooms into the
bathroom when he hears me start to run a bath, and sits on the edge of
the tub trying to scoop up the water as it runs out of the tap. While
I'm in the tub he puts on a floor show for me, chasing plastic kitty
springs and doing acrobatics on his scratching post. Although he's not
a lap cat, he loves being cuddled and brushed, and purrs loudly at the
slightest provocation. He gets on well with our dogs, who respect him
and allow him his own space. Vinny is spoiled absolutely rotten and
deserves to be - he has brought so much love and laughter into our lives!
