Harriet
is a gentle, elderly cat. These days she likes nothing more than
to have a warm and cosy place to sleep, whether it be in a patch of
sunshine coming through the window, or toasting her tummy in front of
the fire, or just curled up on one of the pillows on the bed. She is
very affectionate and loves to be caressed - too firmly and it hurts her
old bones, but not enough, and you find her head gently butting your
hand as if to say "please don't stop - I like that."
I woke up one night to hear little slurping sounds, and found she was
drinking from my glass of water - not sure how long we'd been sharing
our water, but all was well: I hadn't given her any germs. Now she has
her own glass of water by the bed. In her prime she was fantastic at
playing with ping-pong balls, moving faster than we could, with her paws
batting the balls this way and that. Now she is altogether more
dignified and doesn't play - if truth be told, perhaps it's just that
her old bones are too arthritic. She's a happy cat, and has become
extremely talkative with the passage of time - she tells us everything
that goes on around her, just in case we're missing out. She's the light
of our lives - a very special cat to us.
