This
is our little stripey boy Rufus! He is very special to us, not just
because he is so gorgeous but because of the way he came to be with us.
He dashed out and attached himself to my leg, purring like an outboard
motor as I walked to my car on the fourth floor of the carpark at work
(goodness knows how he got up there!) He was the size of a kitten,
perhaps three or four months old I thought, skinny and half starved and with
paint on his fur but he purred and purred and wouldn't leave me. As he
was very obviously a stray, I asked him if he might like to come home
with me. He leapt straight up onto the car seat, all set to go. I drove
home very carefully with a little ball of fur curled up on my lap and
the purring never stopped. Rufus settled in very quickly and easily. Our
other cat Jasper took a little while to get used to having to share us
with an interloper but they have sorted that out and tolerate each other
quite well now. Rufus doesn't really meow at all but purrs constantly
and very loudly - Jasper meows but his purr is almost soundless so I
guess they compliment each other. We took Rufus off to the vet to have a
check-up and get all his shots and the vet told us he was in fact fully
grown, just a very tiny cat. We didn't think he would grow any more. He
has, in fact, increased a little in size but mostly very much in girth -
he has a bit of a paunch at times! But importantly, he now looks like a
normal cat, contented and happy. He loves his food (the night I brought
him home he virtually inhaled a can and a half of food, poor little guy
was half starved) He now enjoys plentiful meals, cat milk and nice
comfy bed to sleep on every night (in fact, he loves to burrow under the
doona and get all nice and warm, while giving our feet a lick and a
nibble - I think he likes to hear the giggles!) Once he's warm enough he
settles down on top of the doona and snoozes all night, only to wake us
up for breakfast with a well aimed purr in our ears - better than an
alarm clock! We love our Little Stripey Boy, Rufity Ruf, Rufster, Rufus
Minimus, Little One, Chewie (those feet nibbles!), Roof Gazer (he loves
to gaze at the ceilings of the house! - must be something to do with
having been an outdoor stray cat) He's a little gem!
