Our
kitty's name is Freddie Cougar, but most of the time we call him
Pookie. Freddie is our alpha cat. He is a biggy boy, weighing in
around 17.5 pounds, and all our other ten cats know he is the boss.
We found Freddie as a tiny kitten late at night on the 4th of July.
Because we live in coyote country, we brought him in for the night and
instructed our daughters to check the neighborhood the next day for his
owners. None of the neighbors claimed him. A few months later my husband
was telling our next door neighbors just how we got Freddie, and was
quite embarrassed when they said, "Yes, he was our cat. We got him to
keep the gophers down!" Their house had no one home when the search was
made for Freddie's owners. Of course they didn't want him back after all
that time, but to this day he hunts on their property.
Freddie was named after Freddy Kruger. When he was a baby he would hide
behind the back of the couch, waiting for a victim to sit down. As soon
as he saw their head he would race up and dig both sets of sharp little
claws into their scalp.
Two of Freddie's favorite foods are corn on the cob and the tops of
biscuits. Even if we cover the biscuits for the next day he will remove
the plastic wrap and help himself to a snack.
Over the years our Freddie has brought a lot of wildlife into the house.
His collection includes live baby snakes, rabbits, rats, mice and
gophers. My husband still recalls the day he saw Freddie walking
casually alongside a gopher that was trotting down our hallway looking
for a way out.
During his lifetime Freddie has made it into three different cat
calendars. He was just a baby the first time, and this year he is our
"star" again the Dateworks cat calendar.
Freddie is a very loving and huggable kitty. He always has to touch you
with his paw when he lays near you, and when you talk to him he purrs
and gives you squeeze-eyes. He is also our best lap kitty. I can't
imagine our life without this wonderfully crazy cat. We are thankful for
him and every purr and laugh he has brought us over the years.
