Schuster
came to live with us almost fifteen years ago via a shelter; his
'human family' left him in the woods when they moved to another state.
It was in an animal shelter with nine dogs that we met - he was
screaming. I would have been screaming, too, with all the barking. I
said I'd pick him up in a couple of hours. I went home, got a crate,
called my vet, called a groomer and went back for the screaming cat.
Mind you, not meowing - screaming. He has never learned to meow - he
screams, purrs and snores when asleep. When the day was done Schuster
looked and smelled wonderful, shots were updated, he was declared a bit
under nourished and then traveled to his forever home. He came home to
'Simon' (now deceased) who accepted him immediately. During Schuster's
introductory period - one week - Simon never left the door except to
eat, etc.; they chatted, put their feet under the door and got used to
one another. They were fast and forever friends. They did everything
together! Simon taught Schuster how to play as he didn't seem to have a
clue. When Simon died Schuster was lost for about a month. I decided a
few months later that he needed another cat for stimulation and
companionship. He was delighted and still is.
Schuster is the most lovable, well behaved kitty ever. Although he
shares his home with two other cats (he's the smallest) he rules the
roost with a mighty paw. He is aware of all the goings-on and has to
investigate everything the other 'kits' and family members are doing. He
greets everyone with friendliness and a look 'em in the eye stare. He
watches TV with the family - really and truly - watches the screen. No,
he doesn't have a favorite show although he enjoys fast-moving action
and different tones of music. Whatever we do, he does.
His favorite thing most days is climbing up his incline scratching box,
jumping to an ottoman, then onto the couch. He then jumps onto the
loveseat, gets on the back and sleeps in the sun. He loves to jump and
run. His favorite toy is a crinkle ball that he bats like a soccer
player. Schuster loves catnip, which is his treat once a month or so.
Instead of commercial cat treats I use play as their treats - they seem
to have 'bought' the concept.
Every night all the cats find their special place to sleep. Of course,
Schuster wants to be as close to me as possible - sometimes if the other
cats come up on the bed he sleeps the top of my head... he must be the
closest. He defends his right, as master of the family, to have me to
himself and not share with the other cats.
He is a joy that makes me smile a lot. Luckily, he has enjoyed good
health and apparently a lifestyle that suits him. I feel lucky he was
abandoned so we got to enjoy his wonderful personality and love.
