Idgie
Amelia is named for a spunky, freckled character in "Fried Green
Tomatoes," and for Amelia Earhart, because soon after I brought her home
from the humane shelter where I adopted her, she tried to fly out the
window. But she believes she is actually a manifestation of the
ancient Egyptian cat goddess Bast, and that her purpose on earth is to
be worshipped. She loves to stand on top of her cat tree, where she can
be properly brushed and worshipped. Every night she waits for us to get
ready for bed; she leaps up on the bed and waits for her brushing ritual
to begin. Unlike any other cat I have ever had, she likes to wear
ruffs, and she has a whole collection of them for special occasions, all
of which match her lovely parti-colored fur. In this picture, she is
wearing her Thanksgiving ruff.
Idgie is quite clever, and has always been a very independent cat. She
can figure out how to open doors, climb into closets and drawers, and
get into trouble. She's not much of a lap cat, but she enjoys sleeping
on the bed with me. Most cat toys bore her, because she can tell
they're make believe. Her grandfather once gave her a laser toy for
Christmas. Now, most cats love to chase the red dot or outline made by
these toys, but not Idgie. She took one look at the laser dot projected
on the wall, then followed it back to the end of the pointer, which she
proceeded to bite. I think she was clever enough to realize the dot was
coming from the laser pointer, and that it wasn't "real;" she wasn't
fooled at all. She does like strings and things like shoe laces - in
fact if you are wearing lace-ups, watch out, because Idgie will come and
untie the knot so she can play with the laces. Because she is so
intelligent, her favorite games involve problem-solving - for example,
we hide treats in a cardboard box under old wrapping paper in a closet,
and she has to open the closet, find the box, and dig under the paper to
get the treats.
Unfortunately she also enjoys biting things, like plants and electrical
wires and occasionally, when she gets very excited, human fingers. We
have to coat all the electrical wires with a bitter product to make them
unappealing to her. She's a real face-forward girl, and loves to snudge
(you know, snout + nudge) things to mark them with her scent. She has
two washcloths that she drags around the house, screaming and howling,
and leaves in significant places, like near the front door when we are
away, or by the pantry closet where her food is kept. We call them her
babies: Green Baby and Blue Baby. When I occasionally have to wash
them, she will wait by the dryer until they come out fresh and clean.
Unlike most cats, Idgie enjoys going on vacation. She has traveled by
car and by airplane, and loves exploring the new places we visit
together. We love having Idgie with us when we travel and always; she
brings so much laughter and joy into our lives.
