This
handsome boy is Otis. I saw his picture on the local no-kill
shelter's website and showed it to my wife who was still in mourning
after losing her longtime cat (child) Leroy several months earlier. He
looked a lot like Leroy, but they actually had him listed as a female
named Brooke! When we went to the shelter to see "her," "Brooke" was
extremely affectionate and took straight to us. My wife was sold - maybe
this pretty kitty could help ease her loss. The adoption fee included
spaying, and the shelter vets actually opened "Brooke" up (!!!) only to
discover the right parts weren't there! She was a he! We couldn't
believe that they'd gone so far without checking properly. Poor Otis was
forced to suffer quite the identity crisis. They apologized and went on
to neuter the proper parts. Well, he got over the indignation and has
grown into a big strapping guy who loves entertaining company and
loves to go outside. Since he has no claws, he only gets to go
out in the back yard occasionally and under very close supervision, but
he is appreciative and stays close by. Here he is enjoying his outing
next to his catnip plants.
Otis is probably the most sensitive cat we've ever had. He is a
wonderful nursemaid who has an uncanny ability to tell if his mom or I
happen to be sick or sad, and he stays right by our side all day, if
necessary. He is respectful of his older sister Abby and his sister
Snickers (who was adopted from the same shelter just a few days after he
was). He is also amazingly patient with his precocious younger brother
Ike who likes to start living room tussles. Whenever we leave town, we
always tell Otis that he is "in charge" while we're away and he never disappoints!
