My
real name is Butternuts, partly because of my resemblance to a
butternut squash. But in polite company I'm usually called Bunny
(because I sometimes hop like one!), or Sweety Pie, Lamb Chop, Baby, Boo
Boo, and Naughty Nuisance. A kind lady took me in when I was starving on
the street and found a forever home for me. I now spend most of my time
in the forever home sunroom. This has a big door that is open wide when
the weather is nice. There are so many birds and animals in the back
yard. Pigeons, sparrows, purple finches, red-wing blackbirds, bronze
grackles, starlings, cowbirds, chickadees, juncos, nuthatches,
woodpeckers, flickers, noisy bluejays, cardinals (one has a bald black
head), hawks, two mallard ducks (in the spring), and silly goldfinches
that eat upside down from their feeder; many coons (the little ones
climb up the screen to tease me), squirrels, chipmunks (these really
make me wiggle), two possums (the big one is really ugly ' his face
looks like a pig's), a big slinky skunk, a red fox that chases
squirrels, and a fluffy beige and chocolate Himalayan lady cat that
visits me several times a day. We kiss through the screen and I sing to
her. One day I thought I heard a mockingbird. I did, but it was in
mommy's computer. Did she ever get it for teasing me! Oops, I forgot
the really pretty grey rats that live in the backyard snow tunnels in
the winter. They are so cute when they poke their noses out of their
holes to get some sun.
Please don't laugh at my picture. This was taken in my favourite room
three days after I had major surgery. For some reason, I kept running
into trouble; I couldn't poo or pee and my hind legs wouldn't work. My
regular vets and chiropractor saw I had a big problem and sent me off to
a special clinic. I thought I had a back problem but I had
life-threatening megacolon that couldn't be fixed, so most of my colon
was removed! The blue collar was to keep me from licking the stitches on
my tummy which was itchy beyond belief. Life in the special clinic was
not dull. I was looked after very well, though I was kind of grouchy and
mean to the staff. Can you believe there was an orange card on my cage
warning people I was fierce' There were lots of big dogs and other cats
to watch, and my parents came to visit me every day. After my operation,
I felt better almost immediately, was nicer to the doctors and others
who cared for me, and went home two days afterwards. I surprised my
parents by jumping over a baby gate two weeks after surgery. They are
still trying to keep me from jumping up on things so I won't twist my
back again, but I am back to my former slightly naughty self!
I am so grateful to everyone who saved my life. I love to cuddle with my
family as often as they will let me, which is very often. My favourite
cuddle position is on the chest so that I can kiss noses, lick chins,
and purr and purr and purr.
An update from Butternuts' family: He appears to have made a 100%
recovery and is back to his former rambunctious and quite naughty self.
He is distributing formal thank you notes to his vets today! Happy
Thanksgiving, everyone.
