I
found Callie sleeping in the flowerbed on my front porch one day last year.
At first, she was very skittish around me and my friends, but eventually she
warmed up to people. This was good, because she was very skinny, and needed to
eat, which is bad if you are a stray that is afraid to be near people. We
began calling her Callie (because she is a Calico). At that time, it was
winter and the nights were very cold. But no matter what, she refused to come
indoors. One evening in January, when the temperature was three degrees, I picked
her up and brought her inside. She completely freaked out and began to
frantically claw at the door. So I let her out. She stayed out all winter. But
at least she was eating, and starting to gain weight.
Eventually, she became more comfortable being around me (and being indoors)
and is now a full-fledged member of the household. As what I would guess is a
thank you for feeding her and fattening her up, she leaves a dead animal on
the front porch almost everyday. Usually birds, but also mice, moles, and once
a squirrel. I do not know where she came from, but I am pretty sure she wasn't
always a stray because she settled in to living indoors pretty well (for
example, she instinctively found and used the catbox her first night inside).
In other words, she understood how indoor life worked. Callie is a great
example of how sometimes a person doesn't choose a cat, but a cat chooses a person.
