Lester
is a tabby. He is bulbous in the manner of a bean-bag chair. He is into
interior design (re-arranging things) and collage work (medium of choice:
toilet paper). He does not meow, preferring "the trill". He's a trillin'
fool! His leaping is Julliard-worthy and elicits exuberant applause from
friends and family. It's hard to believe such a bottom-balanced cat could be
so lithe and graceful. He tends to be a bully. This is sometimes common in the
more artistic types in order to compensate for their lack of ability in team
sports. He makes human friends easily and has devoted followers. He is loving
and strange... mostly in a good ways. His vet says that he has a tendency
toward "aggressive play". We keep lots of antibiotic cream and waterproof
Band-Aids around.
When he picked me at the Humane Society last year I was there to fill a gap in
my heart left by Peggy, another tabby, that died on the table when they tried
to insert a tube to help her breathe. She was beautiful. Lester is not what
one would call beautiful. When I first saw him he came over to me, stuck his
paw out, and patted me on the cheek. Little did I know he would be an amazing
cat and would fill more than one gap in my heart. We always think that each
one is amazing and can't be replaced, don't we? We believe there will never be
a cat as awesome as the one who leaves us. This is true. Each one IS amazing.
They can't be replaced any more than any member of the family. But here's the
thing, it's because they are each so different in demeanor.
When I read cat books that tell me why cats behave certain ways I
am convinced the books are written by people who have never known cats
viscerally. They try to explain everything from a primal behavioral point of
view. And we know that you just can't define cats that way... right? Each one
is a gift. And each one brings something new and different to the table. In
Lester's case, he brings stuff off of the table. Lester is approximately
three years old. He was adopted from the Humane Society about a year and a
half ago, and we live in Safety Harbor Florida happily ever after.
