Meet
Chance, simply the most adorable monocular cat who was ever dumped
in our neighborhood by some heartless person. This little angel and an
identical sibling appeared one weekday afternoon wandering through front
yards, scared, hungry, keeping their distance from people, one of them
with what looked like a bad right eye - and that one seemed to want to
talk to me, although he wouldn't get too close. They stayed around, though
other local feral cats chased them up trees and tried to beat them up.
They ate at our outdoor cat-feteria when other cats would let them -
after a few days the other one disappeared, we never knew what happened
to him... but "Little Bad-Eye" stayed around. Then one day he came
and circled around me while I was grilling hot-dogs on the patio,
talking to me, getting closer and closer. I then saw a large male feral
stalking him from behind a large bush in the yard, so I got between them,
tried to run the other cat off, and this little guy ran under the bush,
then came out, and flopped on his side right in front of me. I
didn't think, I just picked him up... and he purred. We got him
into a carrier and got him to the vet's: He was effectively blind in the
right eye, old scar-tissue from an injury and/or viral infection, but he
was FIV/FLV negative; he got his shots and de-worming and came home - and
absolutely took over.
Chance is a total love. Someone obviously owned him sometime - he's
totally box-trained, he's unbelievably affectionate and playful and
talkative. He's gutsy enough to stand right up to twenty-pound cats in the
pride; and sweet enough to not be murdered by them. His "handicap"
doesn't affect his ability to throw around and chase toy mice at all,
and he's deadly on a laser-pointer. No one told him he's disadvantaged,
so he's not! Someone's discarded unwanted cat turned into our immense
gain! Chance will never be scared or hungry or lonely again, if we have
anything to say about it. He's got his second Chance!
Chance is still a super cuddler and a very sweet boy, and a
very playful member of the Pride. He loves to attack people under
covers, too. For some reason he does not like to face the camera for
his picture. The only one I have is of him after his 'fixing', with the
E-collar on - but it's a good pic of ol' Chance - he's on my lap purring and
smiling as I write this.
