Kayla, the Cat of the Day
Name: Kayla
Age: Eight years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Tortoiseshell
Home: Seattle, Washington, USA

We adopted Kayla in December 2004, six months after we lost our wonderful cat Samantha at age 19 1/2. We went to the PetSmart weekend adoption event to see the cats from a local cat rescue organization. There were several cages of cute cats and it was hard to know where to begin. In a conversation with one of the volunteers, my husband mentioned that our previous cat, Samantha (a.k.a. Sam), had been polydactyl. The volunteer said, "Oh, I think we have a polydactyl cat here!" and led us into a back room behind the cages. Walking free on the floor was an adorable tortoiseshell cat named Kayla. I walked over and slowly put my hand out, not wanting to scare her, but she walked right up and sniffed my fingers. I looked at her paws and they were just like Sam's had been - mitten-like with an obvious "thumb." I picked her up and held her on my lap, and she raised her head and rubbed her forehead under my chin. I knew I was smitten.

Because we also had a Golden Retriever and we wanted to make sure he and Kayla would get along, I didn't take her home that same day but came back with Murray to PetSmart the next day. The volunteer held Kayla up next to Murray and she just sniffed him calmly. Having passed the Golden Retriever test, I brought Kayla home immediately.

At home she was very curious and explored everything, but did not seem nervous and didn't hide or run away. That night I wasn't sure if she would want to sleep on the bed the way Sam used to. I put her on the bed, climbed under the covers, and a few seconds later a purring Kayla walked up to the head of the bed, turned around and curled up on my pillow right against my face. She stayed there pretty much the entire night and I've learned that the best way to sleep is while breathing cat fur. She also will turn around, rest her chin on the side of my face, and start madly kneading my neck while purring loudly. This is not an unaffectionate cat! Kayla is my most wonderful companion and feline soul mate. She makes me happy every day!
