The
first few weeks of Miller's life were rough but he is now safe, warm
and much-loved. My husband found Miller hiding in the sawdust beneath the
planer at the lumber mill where he works. It was two days before
Thanksgiving and the temperature was going to be in the mid to upper 20s
for the next few nights. There often are feral cats around the mill but my
husband had never seen a kitten there before.
Miller was very tiny, very cold, not very responsive and covered with
burrs. My husband was able to pick him up, get him away from the saws and
took him to his office. They laid Miller in front of a space heater, went
to the store and bought him some food. They went back out and looked for
other kittens but never found any. Apparently Miller was a litter of one.
My husband brought Miller home that evening, surprising me. It took me a
couple hours to pick all the burrs out of his fur. Our vet was able to see
him a couple days later and she estimated he was only five weeks old.
Shortly thereafter Miller developed rectal prolapse and in the first month
we had him we spent over $1,000 on vet visits and procedures. Once he grew
a bit bigger the prolapse corrected itself and was no longer an issue. He
has made friends with one of our two other cats. Miller and Coupe get
along fine but Whiskers still doesn't like him. They don't fight but
always keep their distance from each other.
It has been almost a year now and Miller is all grown up. Miller talks a
lot, always responds when spoken to, is a wonderful lap cat and an
enthusiastic purrer. He loves sleeping atop his cat tree and chasing the
occasional house fly or gnat.
