This
little guy, Rodney Dangercat, is the newest member of our cat family.
We never intended to be a four-cat family, but now we are!
I volunteer with a local cat rescue group, Action Volunteers for Animals,
and during my duties one evening I was saddened to see this poor, pathetic
little guy who came from a feral colony. He was terribly nervous of humans
but largely ignored by all the other cats and was pushed out of the food
dishes. He was so skinny his backbone was visible. My daughter and I
decided we needed to foster him until he was stronger and had put on some
weight. Unfortunately, when I asked my husband he answered with a
resounding "no!" Of course, when our daughter approached him with the same
request, he relented.
At first, he stayed in my daughter's room with her and pretty much hid
under the bed except at night when he came out to play. After a couple of
weeks, we let him out and our gentle giant, Dodger, became his surrogate
parent. Dodger grooms him, cuddles him and plays with him to a certain
extent, although he gets fed up with his antics after a while. Our other
two cats, Mel and Monty aren't very fond of him but other than hissing they
have never harmed him.
He is the goofiest little guy ever! He has what we call his kitten frenzy
every morning, running all over the house like a maniac. He plays with all
the toys that the other cats have been ignoring for years, but his
favourite is a piece of red fur. He carries it around all over the place
and loses it daily. We can usually find it under the stove or a chair. He's
still really skittish around strangers, including our oldest son and his
fiancé who live elsewhere, but is fairly comfortable around the four humans
who live with him and will sit in any of our laps for hours. His purr is
the loudest I've ever heard, especially when wet food is being served.
He has a tremendous appetite and has grown so much. His very short fur
feels like velvet and luckily he doesn't shed too much, since the other
three cats shed like crazy! If the rescue group had found him a home in the
first month, we would gladly have given him up, but it's now been two months
and he's here for good. We thought about saving him for our daughter's
boyfriend for when he returns to Canada in a year and a half, but we'll
have to see! He's very much loved by all in this house!
