This
is Kalahar, one of our delightful Savannah kittens, born just ten
weeks ago. They are all gorgeous but this picture of Kalahar is so cute,
we felt you might like to see it particularly.
Kalahar is one of a litter four beautiful little bundles of fur our cat
had, but already they show the characteristic long, slim, tall build of
their breed. The unusual cross between a domestic cat and the Serval, a
medium-sized, large-eared wild African cat, became popular among breeders
at the end of the 90's and resulted in their very distinctive and
beautiful markings.
Savannah cats are typically very sociable and friendly. Ours definitely
are! The adults often follow us around the house. Some people say this is
more like dog behaviour than that of most cats, with their typical
independence. The kittens are currently restricted to our front room.
There is a slight danger our adult male might take exception to young male
kittens, so we keep them apart. However, meeting people is a major factor
in sociability as Savannah kittens grow up. They are certainly very
relaxed and happy to play with our young children.
Kalahar is already willing and able to extensively explore the furniture
and, unfortunately, the curtains! The adults can jump to the top of a
wardrobe from a standing position and it won't be long until he can match
this feat. Kalahar and his siblings have an interesting little "chirp"
rather than a more normal kitten meow, apparently this is inherited from
the Serval part of their make up.
We can't resist spending a lot of time with Kalahar and his siblings.
Watching them play is fascinating but once exhausted they either retire to
their bed or end up on one of our laps. This can trap us for the next hour
or more but hey, as long as we have a book handy, that's fine! There is
nothing more relaxing and comforting than having a kitten curled up deeply
asleep on your knee.
