His
name is Benny, he is a short hair cat. He lives with me in rural
Wisconsin, and he is six years old now. He is very unique because he is
blind! Benny does not let that stop him though! He has the best personality
of any cat I have ever known! I was asked by a friend of my Mom's to take
Benny in because her friend had outdoor/feral cats, but he was worried due
to the fact that Benny's eyes never finished developing when he was a baby,
that he would not make it outside over our lovely Wisconsin winter. Benny
was born with the birth defect called "microphthalmia" which causes
deformed eyes and the cats are usually blind. Microphthalmia may be a sad
result of backyard breeding, just so that people know that backyard
breeding is not a good idea, but if it does happen the cat can have a very
fullfilled and wonderful life! So I decided to take him in when he was
about six months old. He was a hoot, he had to learn not only the layout of
the house, and also had to get along with two other cats and two dogs! He
did that effortlessly with his wonderful, fun and carefree personality,
which you don't often find in a cat!
After being here for awhile, he can now call it home! He loves to climb on
the kitchen table and just do laps in circles until he wears himself out!
Since his sense of smell and his hearing are so good, he always knows when
you're cooking and will do circles on the table until your done cooking. He
will then follow you to the chair and sit and wait patiently while you are
eating for you to give him some of your dinner, if you ignore him, he will
try and help himself. When he was young before he came to me he would
always get left overs from restaurants to eat, so I think that is where he
learned to love regular food. At night he loves to come by the side of my
bed and sit with his paws in my Crocks or my slippers.
I had to send quite a few pictures to show how fun Benny is! He loves to
lay with his brother (the orange tabby) Stewie, and they also love to sit
in the screen door when the door is open to watch the many squirrels and
birds outside. Benny just sits there and listens, moving his head back and
forth listening to all the noises outside, it is just so cute. He also
loves to hang out with my dog Skippy, they lay together, and he is always
kicking his big brother dog Bosco (my black lab/dalmatian) off his pillows
once Bosco has been there long enough to warm the pillow up! That is cute,
it is like Bosco knows he can't see, so he doesn't mind giving up his
pillow! Benny is just always climbing all over and in everything and
anything that he can find and it is always a show to see him figure out new
boxes he loves to play with, or if he finds new toys. He has the "glitter
balls" that I bought him from the vets office, and sometimes he will find
these and pick them up and carry it around in his mouth while he meows like
you wouldn't believe!
I got Benny at a time in my life when things were not going the greatest,
and I can tell you that boy really helped me get through it! He is just
always there when you need him. I had some back problems that had made me
paralyzed back in 2009, and it was like he knew that I really need him to
climb up on me and say hi, and just sit there and purr (he has the loudest
purr I have ever heard!) his little head off and he just had the ability to
take your mind off of things for awhile and just say I LOVE YOU MOM! I
don't know what I would ever do without him!
