Maya, the Cat of the Day
Name: Maya
Age: Eight years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Domestic Shorthair
Home: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Hello, my name is Maya. I don't know for sure how old I am or exactly where I came from, but when I was about seven years old, I was living in a Toronto Cat Rescue foster home in a small city in Southern Ontario. There were two other cats, several children and two large dogs living there too, and it was a very busy place to live.

One day, a man and a woman came and took me on a long car ride in a carrier to Toronto. There, I met my new housemate, a black cat named Prudence. Prudence was not happy to meet me, and was very rude. She hissed and swiped at me if I came close to her.

After a while, Prudence became less angry at me, and, although we never became friends, we lived together peacefully. Sadly, about six months later, Prudence became very sick and went over the Rainbow Bridge. I was an only cat for about a year and was relaxed and happy with my two humans. I also got a little round, as you can see from the pictures. I am a kind and gentle cat who loves being brushed and stroked. Although I am not a lapcat, I stay close to my humans almost all the time. I particularly like skritches under my chin!

One day about two months ago, my humans brought home a lovely little long-haired tabby girl. Would you believe she hissed at me too? I am a quiet, laid-back and sociable cat and have now lived with two other cats who hissed at me! Well, I am going to do what I do best - live and let live and wait for the "new girl" (her name is Daphne) to come around and find out how nice I am.

My humans have put me on a diet - I'm not too sure about that! The new food is different but tastes OK. The treats aren't as plentiful as they used to be, but now that I have a new little sister, I hope to play with her and slim right down. If only she would just stop hissing!

Mom's update: This last photo is one I just took of our two girls, Maya and Daphne, on the very first time they slept on our couch together. We are absolutely delighted in the progress they have made in their relationship. Now several months later, the days of hissing are over!

Maya had the harder time adjusting, I think she must have had some serious troubles in the past. It took her many months to find the courage to get up on any of the furniture. It looks as if she feels quite safe now, both on the couch and being next to her sister. It is gratifying to see.
