Let me tell you about Spook... my cat of every day for almost a decade.

One cold November night in 2004, I was helping a friend move. As we pulled into the parking lot of my friend's apartment, I saw two big glowing yellow eyes staring at me from the dark. It was like the creature was looking into my mind. I yelled at my friend to slam on the breaks and we came within a few inches of hitting a beautiful black cat. The cat gave me a polite but cheerful meow as I exited the truck. She started to follow me as I went to pick up some boxes. The cat followed me in and out of my friend's house at least ten times. As we were putting the final touches on the truckload, I noticed that it was starting to spit snow. I knew it was going to get very cold that night and I couldn't let such a sweet cat sleep out in the cold. I already had a cat and I knew my husband would be irate at the idea of taking in another, so I resigned myself to the idea of taking my found friend to the animal shelter the next day.

At least I could keep her comfortable for one night, right? I picked up the cat and held on to her tightly as we settled in for the ride home only a few blocks away. The kitty who had been so sweet to me a few minutes before turned into a panicked beast and clawed my face. I don't blame her, I don't think she had ever been in a car before and I found out later that she suffers from motion sickness. Once I got home, the cat proceeded to make herself a member of the household by hissing at our other cat and generally being a royal pain in the butt. The husband was none too pleased about the situation. At one point, after almost stepping on her for the umpteenth time, he exclaimed "Cat, you are such an SPOOK!" The name stuck.

We never did take Spook to the shelter. Despite her being a bit of a pill, possibly because she was so spirited, we didn't have the heart to give her up. She is a guardian of our household and a loyal companion who has seen us through the most difficult of times. Spook is highly intelligent and incredibly perceptive. I have come to value her unique perspective on people and have learned to trust her judgment of character. She is a beautiful soul in the body of a beautiful cat and I am thankful every day that I met her on that fateful night.
