Una, the Cat of the Day
Name: Una
Age: One and a half years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Cat
Home: Florida, USA

My son lived in a remote village in South Africa while he was in the Peace Corps. One day, he saw a group of kids standing around something on the floor of the school and wondering what it was. They asked him and he recognized it as a small kitten, put it in his pocket and took it home.

It was too young to eat on its own, so he went to the village clinic and got a syringe to feed her. At first, he had to force feed her milk but when she caught on, she became aggressive about eating and gained weight.

When he traveled and she was still very young, his vet (a two hour bus ride away) kept her for him. When he returned, Una had made a friend of a stray ginger kitten, Andrus, that was brought in and caged with her. They became fast friends and both went home to Una's village and then traveled together to the US.

When his Peace Corps service was coming to an end, he shipped both cats home to Florida where they still live with me. He's away at graduate school but when he comes home as he did this weekend, Una shows that she loves him. Every moment is spent curled up next to him.

She's a sweet girl and is happy and content living in safety in Florida. She's very affectionate to everyone. When a repairman came to fix the cable, she lay down next to him and pawed at his boots. She does not, however, like to be restrained. Her veterinarian thought she was "wild" and needed to be tranquilzied before each visit because of this, but she has learned that Una readily accepts medication and treatment as long as she's not held captive, unable to move, for too long. At home, she is always on a lap or a leg if one is available.

She does love Zach, my son who found her. The cats came to the US months before him. When he came and walked in the door, Una let out a squeak, ran to him and put her paws up on his leg, waiting to be picked up. I've never seen a cat demonstrate such love.
