Black Feather, now generally called just Feather, and his mother and brother (Gray Wolf) were dumped in our cul-de-sac one morning in 2006. Black Feather and his brother were about 10 weeks old. Mom was very ill with serious/terminal respiratory problems, FIV positive, and died shortly thereafter. Feather unfortunately inherited the FIV while his brother was perfectly healthy and FIV free. We placed his brother but Feather, with the FIV, is incorrectly considered un-adoptable by most vets and some rescue folks. Most vets unfortunately, and in our opinion generally incorrectly, recommend immediate euthanasia for FIV positive cats.
Feather is an excellent example of an FIV positive cat that lives a more or less normal life. He could be more susceptible to other infections and diseases, but after 9 years in our pride he remains healthy and has had no notable health issues. He is a friendly little character that likes to be combed and brushed. Given his long fine fur a frequent good brushing is needed, we let it get out of control once and he ended up with a lion cut, much to his embarrassment. There's nothing quite like a blushing shaved black cat.
We suspect, but do not know for certain, his small size may be a result of the FIV condition. He is spunky and funky and a fun little character that brings a smile to us frequently. Please do not write off FIV positive kittens or cats as lost causes. Many can be saved and live long and happy lives ... not all, but many can! Feather is nine years old, let him inspire you!
