Miss Kitty the Domestic Longhair
Name: Miss Kitty
Age: Five weeks old
Gender: Female
Kind: Domestic Longhair
Home: Loma Linda, California, USA

Last week my wife and I were out for our evening walk, when she saw a tiny kitten run across the road in front of us and cower under a truck. She was an abandoned stray, seriously malnourished and in a lot of distress. If we hadn't found her and resuced her, I don't think she'd have survived much longer.

We took her home and I went straight out to the store for cat food and supplies. After she'd eaten she was a lot calmer, but still shivering and frightened. We made her comfortable in a plastic crate overnight, and took her to see the vet the following day. My wife was very worried, as she is pregnant and had heard about the toxoplasmosis issue. The vet took a blood sample, and there then followed a nerve-wracking three days' wait before the test for toxo came back negative.

To begin with, my wife was determined that we should find someone else to adopt the kitten. I, on the other hand, really wanted us to keep her. I grew up with a cat in the house, and he is one of the fondest memories of my childhood. My wife, on the other hand, has a father who is, shall we say, somewhat of a catophobe, and needed deprogramming from a childhood of being exposed to that.

Miss Kitty sure deprogrammed her! I have never known the intensity of both intelligence and affection shown by Miss Kitty in the same cat. When we introduced her to a litter box and scratching post, she figured out what they were for and how to use them almost immediately. As she recovers from her time on the streets, she is getting stronger and more playful, but after she's exhausted from a hour of running around our spare room, she likes nothing better than to be held and cuddled, while purring like a motorbike. A combination of her sweet nature and the negative toxo test convinced my wife that Miss Kitty belongs here for what we hope will be a long and contented life. She is going to be a house kitty on a diet of commercial cat food and reverse osmosis-filtered water, and so will hopefully never contract toxoplasmosis or any other nasty bug. We can't wait for her to meet our (human) baby, when he or she arrives next spring!
