Meet Fluffy - he was a completely feral cat who came to get some food we put out, and over a period of months, we wore him down and got him to accept us as good people who could be trusted- my wife especially put in hours sitting on the porch talking to him and feeding him deli turkey and ham by hand- he was so skitty and gentle we thought he was a female, but when he finally came inside, we discovered he was male- and Fluffy was already his name..... so it was changed to "Fluffy yeah that's my name, what are you gonna do about it?" to save his ego a bit. He's become a great housecat, spending time biscuiting on laps, playing with other cats, and appreciating my wife's cooking (which is excellent by the way)-
About six months ago he started dropping weight and his fur started looking a bit coarse, which meant a fast trip to the vets- he was in midstage renal failure, which he's kind of young for (we think- obviously we don't have any idea how old he really is)- he spent a week in hospital on IV fluids and came home with a Rx for daily sub-cu fluids. We had our doubts about adminstering fluids to a former feral cat- but our Fluff is a trooper!! He's been an angel about the daily fluids, he's packed on almost 3 pounds since his illness, he's happily playing and running around the house like a kitten- he's loving life again! Still gets the fluids, because his kidneys still need that- but he's been wonderful about it and we're happy to keep doing what's necessary for him to enjoy life - which he is doing!
It's Thanksgiving now, and we're super thankful that Fluffy picked us to live with and that he'll be around for hopefully quite a while! One pic shows him resting with Smoke, a younger grey cat who's become his shadow, helping him finish any special foods he gets (of course)- but he gets along with just about everyone, young or old, and will cheerfully bash any younger kitten who gets out of line and tries to take his food before he's ready- he's still our Fluff! We think any cat with such a will to live and who's so cooperative and sweet, deserves to be honored!
