Graydon the Tabby, the Cat of the Day
Name: Graydon
Age: Unknown
Gender: Male
Kind: Tabby
Home: West Palm Beach, Florida, USA

Graydon, or Grady, was an outdoor stray who showed up one day to my carport where I feed several cats daily. He was not friendly, but I don't think he was feral as he wasn't mean either. He was not neutered and had bad eyes, and he looked as though he'd been through the wringer (common with tomcats as they often get into fights). He was shy, but not extremely so and I was able to stroke him a few times when he was eating. I trapped him and got him neutered.

A few months later I saw him as I left to run errands. When I returned and called for him, he didn't appear and I was mildly worried. I let my three dogs out to the fenced backyard, and one dog started barking like crazy for a good five minutes. I went out and saw the barker was standing about eight feet from something in the back corner of the yard, and instantly I knew. I rushed the dogs inside and brought the cat carrier out. I assumed he'd been hit by a car and had dragged himself into the corner of the backyard. He couldn't get up. I raced to the vet to have him euthanized... I thought he was dying. It turned out he'd been attacked by a dog the vet said, just in the hour I was at the supermarket! They shaved his wounds and cleaned him up and I took him home, putting him in an empty bedroom. He was ill for some time as the vet missed a wound and he had a high fever, but another visit discovered that and antibiotics cleared it up.

Fast forward eight months or so, and he's a member of my multi-cat and dog household. He stayed alone in the room for a while, and then things were tough when I left his door open because he HATES dogs. Things seem to have worked out pretty well by this point (knock on wood). He's a lovely old boy (not sure of his age... vet says with stray males they can look much older than they are, and Grady looks old, but could be as young as eight).

I was shocked and thrilled to see him get very playful with a laser pointer last night. He hasn't been big on playing so far. He still has bad eyes and I'm not sure how well he sees, but well enough! I love him, and though the house is crowded with cats and I did NOT need an extra indoor cat, I had no choice. He's safe for good now!
