Zane the Maine Coon mix, the Cat of the Day
Name: Zane
Age: Six years old
Gender: Male
Kind: Maine Coon mix
Home: Whitestone, New York, USA

Zane is a beautiful Maine Coon mix that we adopted from North Shore Animal Hospital two years ago when he was four years old.

One Saturday my husband and I decided to go to the shelter to adopt a cat. We were walking into the shelter, when my eyes fell upon a large cardboard box in their driveway - something told me to look inside!! When I did, I couldn't believe what I saw - it was a box with about 4 cats inside - and each one was listless. One raised his head weakly and looked right into my eyes! It was love at first sight for me, but I could see how sick they all were and that they needed help right away. My husband and I ran inside to tell the attendants about our find. They came out immediately and took the cats inside to be seen by the vet. We asked if we could adopt the "large, silver one". We were told we would have to wait until they were all examined. We came back the next week, and we were greeted by a different crew that didn't know the story nor which cats we meant. We left our name and phone no. in case they found out. Discouraged, we went back home. I was beginning to think we would never see this cat again. There were so many homeless cats at the shelter, but I just felt that he was meant to be with us, and I had to find him again.

We called the shelter during the week, but they still had no information. We went back the next Saturday, and looked around. No, he wasn't amongst the others. Just as we were about to go back home, I spoke to a different attendant who I had never seen before. I told her the story about the 4 cats in the box outside. She said that she had two very sick cats recovering in the hospital area. Could that cat be one of them?

We followed the attendant into the recovery area. My husband spotted him first - "Yes, that's him," I said after seeing him and looking in his eyes!!! As he had a very bad case of upper respiratory disease, we could not take him with us. We were able to adopt him the next week - The shelter gave us his medication, and we nursed him along for another two weeks. We adopted another cat a short time later - and we all lived happily every after!!
