Vita
moved to Vancouver just over two years ago, when we adopted her
from a friend in New Jersey whom we'd met in Berlin. Three years
previously the same friend rescued her from a churchyard in Boston,
across the street from the Dolce Vita restaurant (hence the name).
Vita's life story is very complex.
Vita instantly asserted her authority, and has happily run the
household ever since. She leaps on heads early in the morning,
demands attention every afternoon, occasionally deigns to entertain
us by swatting an inanimate catnip mouse. She is a compact, sturdy
little tabby with large, bright green eyes, an expressive face, and a
comically wobbly walk (her legs are so short we sometimes think she's
part Dachshund). We are continually impressed by the persistent
excellence of her stripes.
Vita has mastered the art of seduction. She lures you with
come-hither looks, then flops down just outside of arm's reach,
forcing you to leave your comfortable chair to rub her exposed belly.
She loves attention, but requires deference. A clumsy movement or
loud exclamation quickly spoils the mood, and she marches off in a
huff. Ineptitude is rebuffed, but attention to her refined and
delicate feline sensuality is rewarded with a luxurious stretch, an
affectionate squint and a gentle, hypnotizing purr. Vita did not,
however, enjoy being posed with antlers for this year's Christmas
card photograph. Her imperious pride does not willingly endure
indignity.
