Yogurt
belongs to my son and his roommates. Since I have not been
blessed yet with any human grandchildren, I look upon Yogurt as my
"grandson." Yogurt is very independent minded and very expressive of
his likes and dislikes. He definitely does not like the newest member
of their household--a pit-bull/German shepherd puppy.
I am seriously into photography and wanted to get a few shots of
Yogurt. I lay down on the grass in their back yard flat on my
stomach, so I could get eye-level with him. The resulting shot, which
you see above, looked so good that I decided to enter it into the
Salinas Valley Fair photography exhibit. For nine years I had always
tried to win Best of Show but had never succeeded--until this year.
That's right, this cat picture got Best of Show! I'm sure Yogurt
would be very thrilled to know how handsome he is and how famous he
became.
I took that picture about a year ago. Yogurt now has a bit of a
pot-belly but he is still very active. He stays aloof from the dog
and is just kind of sadly resigned to his presence. Outdoors he does
the usual cat things, such as killing birds or mice. Indoors he hangs
around while the guys are on their computers and tries to grab their
arms while they're working. One time the guys had a guest who was
sleeping on the couch. Yogurt, for some reason, didn't like him. When
the guy fell asleep, Yogurt snuck up and swatted him on the face!
When I photograph cats, I have to be patient. At first, they try to
climb on me or interfere with the camera in other ways. But, after a
while, they settle down and just do their thing, forgetting I'm
there. That's when I can make some good shots.
