About Us
Sox, the Cat of the Day
Name: Sox
Age: Two years old
Gender: Male
Breed: Tuxedo
Home: Michigan, USA

This picture was taken when Sox was seven months old, when he was living with my son and his wife, before his tragic story unfolds... I saw him first at six weeks old and fell in love with him. I wanted him then, but we had just gotten our first cat, a male, and I wasn't sure he'd appreciate another male cat in the house. I told my son and daughter-in-law about this beautiful tuxedo kitten and they went and got him for their own.

After a year and a half they were not able to keep Sox due to allergies, and I wanted him then, too. But I had three cats by this time, my male and two females. They found what they thought to be the perfect home for him. But, as sometimes happens, he did not adjust to his new home and broke through a screen in the window one day and ran away. I was heartbroken, as were my son and his wife! Sox was no where to be found. Four months passed and I still wondered where he was.

Suddenly one day I received the phone call I had dreamed about! Sox had come home, though he was sick and badly in need of medical care! I begged the new owners to let me have him so I could nurse him back to health. But even I wasn't prepared for what I found when I went to get him. He weighed only four pounds, he was extremely dehydrated, anemic, malnourished, and near death, a true 'walking skeleton' of his former self... What I shed were not the tears of joy I thought I'd shed for finally getting to have him for my own. No, I cried. It broke my heart to see this once beautiful, comical character reduced to such a pitiful little thing with such a sad, distant look in his eyes! Even our vet didn't hold much hope for his recovery. But I believe in miracles, and that's exactly what I prayed for!

He was so weak he could not meow or walk very well or do much of anything. We began the long trek to nurse him back to health. With the excellent care of our veterinarian, and the love of our entire family, Sox is growing stronger every day. It was discovered through tests that he was suffering from a hardening in the intestinal lining due to ingesting something he shouldn't have during his "outing" all of those months. His stomach was no longer allowing him to get the nutrition from any food he was eating. With proper medication he has doubled his weight in just a month. Though he had two bad seizure attacks and was comatose twice his first week back with us, he is finally on the road to recovery. He is beginning to do some of those silly things he was known for doing, like drinking water with his paws...

Yes, I finally have my tuxedo boy, after two years... and wouldn't you know, my male cat, Jasper, just loves him, too! It was hard for me to face the truth that I had not taken him when I had the chance, and he could have been spared that trauma. But we can't go back. All we can do is make sure nothing like that ever happens again. I fell in love with him so long ago; it warms my heart to see that spark coming back into his eyes... When I pick him up and he rubs his face against mine, purring, and I know he loves me, I also know miracles truly happen!
