Esmerelda
Vibrissi, Beauty Cat, Queen of the Universe has been my
boss and best friend for seventeen years. She is an extremely
intelligent and gracious fur person, who pays close attention when
her human subjects talk to her and carries on quite intelligible
two-way conversations (though it does help if you understand cat.)
As Queen of the Universe, she is a benevolent ruler who believes in
delegation. She is in charge of kitchen supervision, holding down
the cozy nap spots, shoulder riding, and timing telephone
conversations and computer sessions. I am in charge of buying cat
food, all maid duties, cat worship and the weather, despite the fact
that sometimes I don't do the best of all possible jobs.
Esmerelda does not like animals, a category which includes human
children under the age of twelve, and has a special dislike of dogs
and male cats who try to do undignified things like sniffing a
lady's bottom. When she was younger one of her favorite activities
was catching chipmunks and letting them go in the house so that she
and her human could chase them together. Now that she is older, she
prefers helping me read by sitting on my book or paper (she tells me
that cats read by absorption when they sit on printed materials.)
She's a very literate cat, wise and wonderful and loving, and well
deserving of her title, Beauty Cat, Queen of the Universe.
