We
picked Smudge from among her siblings because she was
quiet and mellow and we thought she wouldn't get into mischief. Boy
were we wrong! We had to put her in the basement at night because
she wouldn't let anyone sleep, she just wanted to play. Smudge
refuses to let any of our wastebaskets remain upright. As far as she
is concerned they should all be laying on their sides so she can
rummage through them. Mostly she is looking for a crumpled-up
napkin or piece of paper to attack.
Smudge is white with peanut butter and charcoal colored calico
smudges. She loves paper bags, boxes and socks. Her morning
routine consists of eating two bites of food and then jumping on her
Papa's lap for "rubbies," that is, belly rubs. One of the most
adorable things to watch is when she jumps up to try to catch the
specks of dust in a sunbeam. But she's afraid of just about
everything, her shadow included, thus making her the epitome of a
"Scaredy Cat." Garage door openers, lawn mowers and car engines
scare the heck out of her.
Smudge came to us after a year of mourning the loss of her
predecessor, Salem. Salem was 16 years old (so we had the name
before the cat on that TV show about the witch), our first baby, and
we thought no other cat could take her place. And we were right,
but Smudge is trying very hard!
