Gatsby
is special in a number of ways. Over eight years ago, my
then-teenaged daughter found Gatsby when he was no bigger than the palm of
her hand (approximately 4-6 weeks old), wandering along a deserted road,
with a mangled tail, protruding ribs and very friendly disposition. After
much love, affection and medical attention, Gatsby emerged a healthy little
kitten without a tail (it ultimately was amputated, twice). He now sports a
stump, which he wags furiously and determinedly whenever he's angry or
annoyed with the humans around him.
He has grown into the king of the house, where children and adults, a
Golden Retriever and a Basset Hound, and two other cats, give him a wide
berth. Gatsby is generally a congenial but determined bed partner, and has
become a very important and very-much loved member of the family. He is
presently the subject of a new children's book, being written and
illustrated now, and due for publication late this fall.
