When
selling Insurance at a prospect's country home north of Toronto,
there under the porch were four kittens about five weeks old. I fell
in love with the only Gray male tabby in the litter with three other
calico females. The man I was visiting was a little "rough around the
edges," or so I viewed him, being dressed to do work around the house
and talking like a country boy. He saw me making a fuss and spending
time with the kittens outside and said,
"Ya wannem? Cause I'm gonna get rid of em soon."
"Rid of them?" I exclaimed. "How? To who?"
"I'll drown em or somethin," he said, as if it were just another
routine day in the country.
"No you won't!" I blurted as I scooped up as many kittens as I could
snuggle.
About three weeks later I came back (delivered his new policy) and
picked up all four kittens in the litter. My friends' widowed mother
took two and I kept two.
P.S. I don't think he would have really harmed them, because he
seemed very concerned as to their welfare and how they were doing. I
think he knew I was a city boy and a soft touch, but it worked out
for everyone. He got rid of the litter and I sold him a policy and
got two great companions!
