This
is Velvet. She is not my cat, although it began that
way when I found her as an abandoned kitten. She has chosen
my significant other and now belongs to him. Cats tend to
choose their own person and she has chosen him (as I did).
He had never owned a cat nor been owned by one... until
now. He loves her independence, her soft sleekness, black
velvet-like fur, and her ability to be affectionate at
will.
She is only five years old, but has been diagnosed with a
life-threatening illness. We have had to put her on a
special diet and medication. After her diagnosis, he gently
carried her around the house. Velvet still loves to sleep
in the sun in one of our patio chairs. I couldn't keep back
the tears the day I saw my significant other gently cover
her with a blanket "to stay warm" while she
slept. We don't know if she has three weeks, three months,
or hopefully, three years or more, but each day will be
precious, and we will continue to be her door opener, her
cat food can opener, and her caretakers for as long as we
are lucky enough to have her.
Black cats have been known to have a reputation as
"bad luck." Such is certainly not true for us. We
hope Velvet's own luck holds, with care, for a long and
comfortable kitty life. At the present time, Velvet is
doing well. We see signs of our formally healthy kitty, and
we know she is, for now, comfortable, happy, and loved.
