Nikki
was adopted from The Etobicoke Humane Society on May
12, 1997. We already had a dog, and I was hoping to adopt a
second one, but my husband insisted on a cat. Being
primarily a "dog person," I was quite surprised when I
instantly fell in love with Nikki. I think he was raised
with dogs, because he's not your typical kitty - he comes
when called, licks your hand, chews everything in sight (as
you can see from his picture!), and walks around the
neighborhood on a lead and harness. I think I knew he was
the one for us when he lapped up all the attention we could
give at the humane society - he loves to cuddle!
When I take him for walks, people stop and stare. One time,
a woman walking her Pekinese told me to keep him away from
her dog since he wasn't fond of cats. The next minute,
Nikki started chasing her dog down the street - after all,
they were almost the same size! Nikki is not afraid big
dogs either, and enjoys tormenting his pal Max (our adopted
German Short/Wired Hair Pointer cross) by chasing him and
biting his ankles. Max is always gentle with him, so we
don't have to worry too much about the difference in size.
We have a large fenced-in yard, but my husband hopes to
build Nikki his own safely fenced-in cat run one day (just
like we saw in a past issue of Cat Fancy). Thanks to Nikki,
now I not only want a second dog, but a second cat as well!
