We
adopted Lucifer from a no-kill shelter in Jacksonville, FL in
September, 1984 when he was approximately three months old. In his
youth he was a feisty little guy, full of pep, energy and curiosity,
so much so that he could go outside only under direct supervision.
Over the years he settled in nicely with the family, which included
the adoption of a female stray four years later, Miss Kitty Angel,
and a few months after that, the adoption of a dumped Australian
Shepherd, Fannie Mae.
Together we have traveled the US and Canada in our motor home, from
Florida to California, and from Alaska to Newfoundland. We have been
a closely-knit family, each knowing where he or she stood, respecting
each other and recognizing each other's personalities. Lucifer became
a true lap cat, never seeming to get enough physical contact with his
"Mama." He slept with me each night of those l4+ years, and
was in my lap or by my side whenever possible. I do believe he loved
me as much as I loved him.
This all came to a tragic end on Christmas Day, when without any
forewarning or clue, Lucifer simply laid down and the floor and
died. The shock has been tremendous and I am having a horrible time
dealing with it. The bond that he and I shared can never be matched,
and I'm not sure I want it to be - the pain is too great when it's
over. I am grateful for the years we had together and am looking
forward to the day that I can look back with a smile instead of
tears.
