Sophie
Thompson is a cat with a plan for living. She is a firm
believer that each day begins with morning races up and down the
upstairs hall at least three times with a detour down the stairs at
least twice followed by 1.5 ounces of canned cat food followed by thirty
minutes prowling around the garage, checking, apparently, to make
sure that nothing has changed since the day before. Following that,
she comes in and goes upstairs to go to sleep a) on the bed, if it's
winter, or b) in the windowsill, if it's summer.
She loves both her mom and her dad; if both people are home, all is
well. If one is on a business trip, she gets worried, and will wake
up the remaining one in the middle of the night by licking his or her
face. If both mom and dad go away on a trip, when they come back, she
licks faces indiscriminately. She likes to be where mom and dad are;
if they are in different rooms, she often parks herself right in the
hallway in between where she can keep an eye on both if necessary.
Her favorite thing is to be combed with the flea comb--she will even
purr for the vet because he combs her every time we go!
Sophie is not a sedate cat; she will play with anything. A coiled-up
pipe cleaner is perhaps the best toy, but she likes most anything. If
her owners don't offer to play with her, she will go get a toy and
bring it to them. One of the funniest things she does is drag a long
piece of fabric on a stick around, trailing the stick behind her. Up
the stairs, up onto the bed, wherever. If she won't come in from the
garage, the string of leather on a stick is the secret weapon which
will always lure her back in. Sophie is a cat capable of making
decisions: In experiments, when Sophie is given the choice between
two different toys, she will consistently choose the same one. Sophie
is a very funny cat; she isn't very coordinated, and will fall off of
things. More than once. Oops! Slid off the bed. Oops, fell out of the
window sill. Oops, fell off the stool. Once she ran down the hall,
aimed for the open window, missed, and flew splat into the wall.
She then proceeded to wash herself nonchalantly - "I meant to do
that."
She may be clumsy, but Sophie is the friendliest cat her mom has ever
owned in 38 years of owning cats. Sophie Thompson is the Cat of the
Day every day in our household!
