On
December 3, 1998, our eleven-year-old Persian, Daisy, went to the
vet for a routine dental. Nobody has any idea why, but she never came
out of anesthesia. We had her for five years, and we obviously felt a
great and unexpected loss. Two days later was my husband's birthday,
and we went to another local clinic that takes in strays to start the
hunt for another cat. Both to fill the void in our hearts, and the
obvious void in our second cat's heart (she's a black DMH named
Cassie). But I told my husband... I had two "rules" for
getting a new cat. It had to have short hair and not be a kitten.
Well, here we were in the middle of a group of about ten cats of all
ages and sexes when one cat decided to crawl right up my husband's
leg to his waist. He picked her up and right away we noticed that she
only has three legs! He fell in love immediately. Big surprise, she
was a long-haired gray kitten! It turned out that at eight weeks of
age she had been run over by a forklift which severed her right rear
foot. The owner gave up rights to her, but the employees at the
clinic could see something special in her, so they performed a
surgery and ended up removing most of her leg (she has a little stump
left). We knew right away that we had to take her. Some people are
standoff-ish about "handicapped" animals, so we wanted to
make sure she had a good home. My husband came up with the name
Weebles (they wobble, but they don't fall down).
She is a holy terror. Not only does she not even notice her supposed
disability, but seems to be even more mischievous than a
"normal" kitten. But we love her more every day, and she
gets along great with Cassie!
