Sophie,
her mother and brother were homeless cats in our
neighborhood. We adopted her brother last June after they were both
trapped in a garbage bin near our house. Sophie escaped and for
several months we saw her and her mother only occasionally, although
we left food for them daily. After surviving Hurricane Bonnie on her
own last August, Sophie began coming up daily for food. She took up
residence on the vacant lot next to our house and as the weather
turned cool, began sleeping in the cat carrier I left for her on the
porch and climbing into my jacket to eat while I held her dish.
Before she came to us, she apparently suffered an injury to her neck.
She tilts her head to one side when she walks or runs. She also has
one very long toe on her hind foot, which makes for an interesting
gait!
Sophie came inside to live in November and gives the out-of-doors a
wide berth! Her favorite activities, in addition to wrestling and
racing up and down the stairs with her brother, include supervising
me as I clean the litter boxes, often getting into the boxes while I
scoop. She runs pell-mell for the garage when she hears me preparing
food for several homeless cats in our neighborhood. She has a
ringside seat at a vent in the garage where she can watch them eat.
Her favorite snacks include potato chips, doughnuts, and homemade
bread. Sophie is a very sweet and loving kitty. She is also a
survivor, having survived a hurricane, and her first six months of
life in a neighborhood that used to be a maritime forest and still is
home to all sorts of wildlife. She has added much joy to our home and
we hope that she will be with us for a very long time.
