We
lost our beloved Sweet Pea this year. We, is myself (Sweet Pea's
human mother), and her feline brothers, Kipper, CG, and Bear. Sweet Pea
passed away on January 15, 2000. She was almost ten years old. She died
of liver flukes caused by eating a Florida lizard. She was an indoor
cat, but the little lizard got into the house for her to find. I have
since learned that Florida, SW USA, and Hawaiian lizards carry a
parasite which can cause these liver flukes. Sweet Pea was the runt of
her litter, and her age, size, and somewhat plump condition were against
her in fighting this infection. She died in my arms a little before
midnight on 1/15/00.
I would like to let all loving, human cat parents know about the danger
to cats from small lizards in certain areas of the country, of which
they may not be aware. I am also nominating Sweet Pea, because she
deserves it. She was a most talkative and loving member of our family.
She loved all her feline brothers, and spent a good deal of time
breaking up little squabbles between them. They always respected her
counsel because they knew how much she loved each of them. She shared
her love equally among them, and gave her unconditional love to me. She
received the same unconditional love from me and her brothers. We all
have grieved her passing in our own ways. But we have all come through
this difficult time because we all remember Sweet Pea's love for us, and
we have all had each other to lean on.
