Last
May (Mother's Day) my fifteen-year-old son and I were driving to
the store for some pool toys. We were traveling on a road that is two
lanes wide on each side and has a speed limit of 45 mph. Most cars
travel faster than that. We were about half way to the store on a busy
traffic day when I noticed something on the white line ahead. It was
being blown from one side of the white line to the other as vehicles
whizzed by it. It loked like a rag but appeared to be moving. As we
passed it I looked down and saw that it was a kitten! I slammed on my
breaks and stopped all the traffic. With horns blowing and drivers
yelling, my Son ran back a few cars and retreived the kitten from the
road. Amazingly, it was not hurt but it was very dirty and so scared it
was violently shaking. I thought it was going to die from shock. We took
it to the nearest vet who did a thorough examination. He said it was a
female Burmese about three and a half weeks old, six inches long, and
way too young to be away from its mother. The vet said we would have to
feed her with a bottle and teach her how to eat solid food. When we
returned home, we presented her to my wife as a Mother's day gift. She
loved her. We spent the next five weeks weening her off the bottle and
on to solid food. The photo was taken the day we found her and right
after her first bath and first meal. I caught her in
"mid-lick" as she was trying to clean her face. She was named
Miracle for obvious reasons. Currently, she's about nine months old and
happy to be a permanent house kitty.
