Mabel, the Cat of the Day
Name: Mabel
Age: Two years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Blue Calico
Home: St. Paul, Minnesota, USA

Mabel (her name from a previous owner) picked me out when I visited the local humane society on October 28, 1998. I visited just before they were about to close but that was enough time for her to reach out at grab at me through the bars of her cage every time I walked by. I visited the next afternoon so I could have a longer time to see all of the cats, but every time I walked by Mabel would grab at me and then glare at me if I had the nerve to look at another cat. I put a hold on her and on Halloween I brought Mabel home.

It wasn't until I was driving home and talking to Mabel to soothe her (she did not like traveling in a cardboard box!!) that I realized she was now Mabel of Abel Street (the street we live on)!! It was meant to be. The humane society and all of the books and articles I had read about bringing a new pet into a home warn about the new cat being skittish and aloof the first couple of days. Well, Mabel never read those articles. From the first couple of hours after I brought her home she was snuggling up to me and letting me know she knew she was home. Even the doorbell ringing from trick or treaters didn't seem to spook her. When we went to bed that night Mabel followed me to bed and promptly found her place sleeping right next to me.

Mabel loves to play games with me. One of her favorites is "chase the ball." I have a pretty long hallway in my apartment which is perfect for her to get a good run in. I'll throw the ball and she'll chase after it - she won't bring it back to me, but she will chase it. Then she will quickly go to find a hiding spot to pounce on the ball the next time it is thrown. She would play this game for hours if I didn't wear out first! If I'm taking too long with the next throw I will usually hear her give an impatient chirp from wherever she is hiding! She also like to hide under my wingback chair that has a skirt around it perfect for her to hind behind. The chair happens to be right next to the hallway so gets lots of traffic. If I'm not keeping a good eye on where she is she will usually succeed in trying to trip me or at least spooking me as she jumps out from under the chair to scare me. She's quite the rascal and I know God has blessed me with the precious gift of this "kid!"
