Lounging
among the silk hydrangeas in a wicker planter was one of
Humphrey's favorite pastimes. Of course, it didn't do much for the
hydrangeas, but what did he care. From the time we adopted him at five
weeks of age, he was an explorer and getting into all sorts of things he
shouldn't - that he was born on April 1 was no mistake! A master at
opening doors, we could never shut a closet without checking first to
make sure he wasn't hiding in a corner. For such a big cat (15 pounds)
Humphrey was a scaredy cat. At the first clap of thunder, he ran for the
nearest bathroom sink where he curled up until the storm was over. He
also could hear the garage door open from the opposite end of the house
and would be waiting to greet us. Humph, as he was affectionately known,
died in March, three weeks shy of his 11th birthday.
