Phytoplankton
was the first kitten I picked out as an adult living out
on my own. From the first day I brought her home I could tell she was
going to be different. She's just aloof enough that you go ga-ga on her
rare affectionate moments. She's just beautiful and takes tremendous
care of herself. She loves life but doesn't want you to know she does,
and she is a bit bothered by being watched. She won't eat people food or
even canned cat food, but does love soft treats. When she was a kitten,
I gave her a piece of meat I trimmed from some steak and thought she was
going to love it the way she pounced it. I was surprised to find it
covered with hair and resting on the seat of my chair when I sat down to
eat later. She'd played with it for hours but hadn't taken a taste. She
loves her tennis ball and will throw it in the air with her back feet
and catch it with her front feet, but plays opossum or turns her nose up
if she discovers you watching her have fun. My significant other makes
furniture for pets and Phyto is one of our most lovely models, as you
can see in her picture. Phyto gives us a good scare at least once a year
by eloping for a good week or so. On my way home from posting her
"missing in action" flyers, she typically has arrived home,
giving me a "not again, Mom" kind of embarrassed look. I could
go on forever about Phyto. She's been with me for over a third of my
life and there is never a dull moment. *smiles*
