Cooper
came to live with us along with his brother, Cameron, on the
day they turned seven months old, right after Easter of 1999. At first
Cooper was the shy one, but it didn't take long for his true colors to
come out. He is the clown of all cat clowns! He loves to act goofy,
make faces, and play "tag" with the other cats.
Cooper (also known as Scoop) must always be the center of attention
whether he's at home, at the vet, shopping or at a cat show. Scoop
is quite the talker too. (Must be that Siamese gene!) He and I carry
on complete conversations each morning when he wakes me up to be fed.
It's as if he knows exactly what I'm saying to him. I got these
bunny ears for another cat to be in a costume contest at a cat show,
but Scoop insisted on wearing them. (I think he has aspirations of
trying out for the Cadbury creme egg commercials!) He was having such
a good time with his new ears until we started laughing at him so
hard, then he got this big frown on his face, which is when I snapped
this photo.
I got Cooper as part of a "package deal" when I bought my
cream and white Persian, Cameron. Cameron was supposed to be the show
kitty and Cooper was just his buddy. They were born one day apart and
their moms raised them together. Cooper ended up having such a funny
personality that we decided to show him anyway even though his nose is a
little long/low for the Persian-Himalayan standard. He is always a big
hit at the shows. The more people laugh at him, the sillier he acts.
Cooper has an enormous amount of hair for a Persian living in the
sweltering heat of Mississippi. Would you believe he is actually
"out of coat" in this photo, having just shed his winter
coat?! Typically, he gets a bath once about every 10 days, maybe a
little less often in the winter. It takes about 30 minutes to bath him
regularly and about 45 minutes for a show bath (we usual several
different shampoos), which he doesn't mind at all. I use a special cage
dryer which I hang outside his carrier to blow dry him with, which
usually takes about an hour to an hour and half. We then finish him up
by hand with the dryer - that he does not like! Immediately when
you turn off the dryer though, he starts clowning and purring. He likes
to be clean, but just doesn't like how long it takes.
Cooper and the rest of my Persian get combed every day and their
little faces and eyes get cleaned several times per day. Having a
Himalayan or Persian like Cooper is a lot of hard work, but definitely
worth it. Cooper has brought us so much laughter and joy and we love
him dearly. There is never a dull moment in our lives or in the lives
of the people he meets. I believe Cooper thinks its his place in life
to make people happy, which he does so well. We love our Scoop Bunny
and are very glad that he and his brother joined our family. They
keep us young by keeping us laughing.
