Here
is Ben (a.k.a. Bunny Cake). Ben was abandoned in a drafty, ancient
apartment building in a cold, snowy Minnesota December. He was about
four or five months old, and needed lots of attention.
Because I had just cared for an aged, invalid kitty through his last
months, a relative figured I would be an easy mark for adopting another
hopeless critter. He was right. Within a week, he earned the name Ben
because he followed me around like a devoted son (Ben is Arabic for
"son of"), because he woke me up at 5:00 every morning
(Westclox makes an alarm clock called the Baby Ben), and because he
never used his claws when we played, Gentle Ben, or "Ben? Can I
just say one word, Ben? Catnip." His name is flexible.
He's a loyal and sweet kitty who has remained gentle and patient all his
life, even as he endures the attention of two small children. Ben is
just about incompetent as a hunter or fighter, and has scars on both
ends to prove it. But he's smart enough to spend his summer days under
the raspberry bushes, sort of like Ferdinand the Bull, and to climb the
oak tree out front when chased by a dog. He bloodied his back claws in
the ascent, but at least the dog didn't get him! Ben is a perfect cat
for our family, and I hope we have him in good health for many years
more.
