Tiger,
our four-year-old American shorthair cat, meows like a Siamese
when we say to him: "Speak." Then he gets a treat. He is a
very affectionate cat, sensing whenever anybody in the family is
feeling low or ill, and paying extra attention to them. Though he
loves to sleep in boxes, paper grocery bags and empty schoolbook
backpacks, with just his pink nose peeking out, he also functions as a
living alarm clock by rustling plastic bags or scratching the carpet
until we awaken. In the morning, he watches my husband shave, purring
happily while sitting on the side of the bathroom sink.
We got Tiger at the SPCA, where he was staying with his mother, a
rescued stray. His eyes were sore when we brought him home, but with
careful application of salve, he recovered in a few weeks. Today his
only health problem is FUS, but he makes sure he eats a special diet
to keep his kidneys in good working order. His one vice is olives,
which make him act inebriated. He has grown to a muscular fourteen-pound
amateur ornithologist whose favorite hobby is watching and
chattering at finches and robins from his perch in the picture window
in our living room. He also monitors each leaf that falls from our
maple tree in the front yard every October. Our whole family loves
Tiger, which is perfect, because he certainly loves us.
